Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says,
"Today if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness, when your fathers tempted Me, proved Me, and saw My works forty years. Therefore I was grieved with that generation and said, They always err in their heart, and they have not known My ways. So I swore in My wrath, They shall not enter into My rest."
Hebrews 3:7-11 gives us a direct quote, attributed to the Holy Spirit. In the body of this statement by the Holy Spirit, we find the personal pronouns Me, My, & I, all of which refer to the Holy Spirit, since it is the Spirit, who is making this statement. This is an interesting point since in other Bible verses we find slightly different wording than what is contained in Hebrews 3:7-11.
Heb 3:7-11, is a restatement of Psa 95:8-11; however, according to Psa 95:6-7, this quotation is attributed to Jehovah & God.
Hebrews 3:7-11 refers to the Exodus, the forty years in the desert. In Heb 3:9, we find, tempted Me meaning the Holy Spirit. In Exo 17:7 & Deu 6:16, both of which refer to this period & the same tempting, we find,
- - " -because they tempted Jehovah "
- - " You shall not tempt Jehovah your God- "
In Heb 3:11, concerning this same period, we find I swore & My anger, both of which refer to actions by the Holy Spirit. We find in Num 32:10,
- - "Jehovah's anger was kindled at that day, and He swore-",
which also refers to this same period.
From the interchangeability between "Holy Spirit," "Jehovah," & "God" in these Bible verses, it is clear that the Holy Spirit is Jehovah & is God. This should come as no surprise, we have seen the same interchangeability between The Father & God & between Jesus & God. Yet, we know that Father, Son, & Holy Spirit are separate & distinct from each other. (See Matthew 28:19, John 14:23, & 2 Co 13:14.) This interchangeability in God's inspired word, the Holy Bible, adds support for the belief in a triune nature in the Godhead, which is the Trinity Doctrine.
